Shana: Holy crap. I'm watching the SNL sketch with Anne Hathaway spoofing Katie Holmes.
Paul: pretty crazy eh?
Paul: She did a great impression I thought
Shana: You can tell the audience was kinda taken aback by her impression
Shana: Haha! I love the Royal Family sketch
Paul: that was pretty good
Shana: As soon as "William" leaves, they start talking like Jason Statham
Paul: I thought her Dorothy impression was spot on.
Shana: Yeah
Paul: She did a good job, its just too bad the most of the episode was still pretty unfunny
Paul: the weekend update stuff was dumb
Shana: I'm not there yet. Enjoying the hell out of the music act
Paul: I didn't watch it
Shana: You missed out. She is going on the iTunes wish list
Paul: what kind of music?
Shana: Hard to describe...but the singer's voice is amazing
Shana: And the song is catchy
Paul: come on…similar band?
Paul: nothing you can tell me that would make me understand what kind of music it is?
Shana: Nope...
Shana: The band name is Florence and The Machine
Shana: Go listen
Paul: so this band invented a brand new music genre
Paul: thats amazing
Paul: few people can say that
Shana: I'm gonna stop talking to you...
Paul: maybe Elvis?
Paul: the Beatles?
Paul: and now Florence and The Machine
Paul: amazing
Shana: ...
Paul: I mean, music that you can't even describe? That's an impressive feat.
Shana: I hate you.
Paul: no, no, you have made me a believer. Now I want to hear this band
Paul: that is quite a risk, trailblazing into a new frontier
Paul: opening up a brand new genre of indescribable music
Paul: They should call the style "InDes" for short.
Shana: Shut it!!!
Paul: I wonder how many bands will follow the indes movement. We could be seeing a whole new generation unfold right before our eyes. Like watching the beatles on Ed Sullivan. I can't believe I skipped it.
Shana: .........
Paul: One day I'll tell my grandchildren how I skipped past them on my dvr.
Paul: And they will be like "Grandpa, I can't believe how naive you were!"
Paul: And I'll be like "Well Grandchildren, I just didn't know that I was seeing a band that would change the world."
Paul: "But your Grandma knew. She couldn't even describe them to me. She had no words"
Shana: Quit bugging me!!! I'm trying to play Rock Band!!
Paul: I wonder if they have any DLC from the new Indes movement.
Shana: AHHHHH!!!
Shana: Leave me alone!!

Television Programming
1) Smallville.
I'm a HUGE fan of the show. I joined this party late, but I absolutely love it. It is all stories built in a land of comic book heroism, which was a childhood obsession that still grabs my imagination today.
Smallville is an entire series that is an origin story. It is a coming of age tale showing the path Clark Kent walks to go from farm boy to the greatest hero of all time, but it also much more than that. Watching Lex Luthor develop from a spoiled rich kid with a decent heart to an evil mastermind is actually more interesting to me than Clark's story. How does Lois Lane go from college dropout to super reporter? How does Chloe go from ace reporter for a high school newspaper to "Watchtower" (the computer geek information specialist for the Justice League. As if I had to explain that...)
It is all interesting to me. There are some stories I could do without. But the show itself is great. I watch it every Friday.
2) Chuck
I will admit it. I did not like this show when it first aired. Shana kind of liked it, so we watched it, but it was basically a show we watched while we waited for Heroes to come on. It had a hot chick (Sarah), so I wasn't complaining. But it was a throwaway show really.
But giving the show a chance, it really started to pick up. The characters that seemed just 'throwaway' suddenly became interesting. Adam Baldwin started as a very one dimensional 'tough guy', but actually developed into somebody I cared about.
I can't explain why I like Chuck. And, if you sit down for just 1-2 episodes...you will probably dismiss it. But if you watch it over the course of an entire season...I think you MAY really fall in love with it.
3) Castle
Castle is a show about Nathan Fillion. It is a cop show that is fairly standard "situational crime drama" tripe. It reminds me a lot of "Murder, She Wrote", except that the part of the old woman is played by Nathan Fillion. (Well, he isn't technically an old woman. As far as I know)
Nathan Fillion makes the show watchable. The only reason I started watching this show is because Nathan Fillion played Malcom Reynolds on Firefly, a show I loooooooooooooove. And...the only reason I still watch it is because Nathan Fillion is on it.
He plays snarky and self assured so well, and has great comedic timing. I will seriously watch any show/movie/school play that this man stars in, and this program is no exception.
4) Holmes on Homes
One thing could be said about me that I will not argue in the slightest: I am not a handyman.
I don't know much about carpentry that I haven't seen on TV. I don't know much about Plumbing, electrical work, gardening, landscaping, motors, or cars. The closest I have ever come to that was working with my Uncle while I was in high school doing some roofing projects.
So I can carry shingles up a ladder, and I know generally what the steps are to putting a shingle roof on a house.
I know computers. I know a little bit about programming. I can make the blinking 12 go away on any VCR on planet earth. But I couldn't frame an interior wall correctly if my life depended on it.
That said...I love watching Mike Holmes. I love watching other people work.

Sometimes I don't know what to do in WoW. On one hand, I'm totally into raiding. When I'm in the thick of it, I'm having fun. I really love the teamwork and challenge involved.
But right now…I can't say I enjoy any other aspect of the game. I played around with making gold on the auction house. It was fun for a while, but I now have enough gold to buy….whatever I want in the game. But I don't really want anything so it's kinda moot. (I could buy another mount I guess...but bleh)
I played around with leveling alts again and brought my 5th character to L80. While that was mildly entertaining for a while, it was mostly just a grind. At this point I don't think I could do it again. I'll probably level a Worgen druid for the expansion, just to see the new leveling experience that has been hyped, but it is anybody's guess if I finish it. I give myself about 50:50 odds.
So, if I'm bored with the game, why the guild charter? I've been thinking about setting up a guild that is focused on raiding for just two nights a week. Currently, the guild I'm in raids 3 nights a week (down from 4 in BC), and we are at the end of current content with nothing left to raid. Oh, we could do Heroic Lich King (the hardest fight in this expansion), but given the summer, we just aren't going to have a consistent group of people to pull that off. And quite frankly, I've killed the Lich King. Doing it again on Heroic just doesn't hold much appeal for me.
So I think that if I setup a guild that only raids 2 nights per week in the new expansion, I think I will have less of a chance of getting ahead of the content, and (bonus), I get more time to do other stuff with my evenings.
But the problem is….I don't really have a desire to run another guild. I figure that pretty much any guild leader can expect to spend about 5-6 hours per week in various management 'stuff'. Whether it is recruiting, managing the guild bank, handling problems, or other minutiae…it all takes time. Time I'd rather spend doing other things. So I don't REALLY save any time by going to 2 nights. In fact, it is probably a net loss overall.
So I guess I'll probably just stick with my current guild. Ultimately, it is just easier, and lets face it: I'm lazy. But man it would be nice to only raid two days a week...
*sigh*

From the future
FROM THE FUTURE
According to my calculations, this post should happen sometime in the summer of 2010, which, if I recall correctly, is after I met my wife and had kids, but before I got my superpowers, walked on the moon, and won the Oscar for playing myself in the movie based on my life (I really nailed the impression).
Things are really crazy here IN THE FUTURE. We finally did away with Fossil Fuels and all our vehicles are all powered by a revolutionary technology that extracts energy from the power of suck. Perez Hilton, Joe Theismann, the entire 'E' network, and the people who made 'Streetfighter, the Legend of Chun Li' now perform a valuable national service and give us enough clean energy so that we no longer have a dependance on foreign oil.
The National Debt was eliminated by instituting the 'stupid tax'. Every time somebody posts a youtube video of somebody purposely hitting themselves in the balls, the IRS comes and confiscates everything they own and shoots them in the head. Honestly, their stupidity was going to kill them eventually anyway…it's really just being humane. And it prevents these idiots from harming anyone else with their nonsense. Win/Win
Also in Sports, after a dismal start in the new millennium, I'm pleased to report that the San Francisco 49ers are now working on their 14th straight Superbowl, and just as awesome, the Mariners killed the Yankees. No, not playing baseball. I mean they actually brought machine guns into the stadium and killed everyone in the Yankee's organization. Within the city limits of New York City It is considered to be the greatest tragedy since 9/11. Outside of New York, I don't think anybody noticed.
The President…wait, I guess you know him as Chris…he is doing well. I think Janel being the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court probably helps. Or it may actually hinder him. They still still fight a bit. Executive and Judicial! You know how it is…
Anyway, the reason I came back in time is to tell you this: It is vital that everyone reading this ties their shoelaces EXTRA TIGHT on November 3rd, 2010. I can't tell you why, but trust me when I say that the very fate of the world depends on it.
Onward and upward!

iPhone 4.0
I'm following some people on twitter that said they stood in line for 4 hours...those people are nutso. I'd have given up, heh.
I've been asked why I bought an iPhone. After all, I'm a monumental geek. I believe open source leads to increased innovation, better security, and more functionality. Even though they are inherently more stable, I dislike closed proprietary systems. I don't like Apple's implementation of the App store. Specifically, I do not like the fact that they reject apps solely because they duplicate the functionality of the preinstalled apps.
If an app developer can build me a better mail or calendar app…they should be able to do so. I'll pay for it. A closed rejection system that has no 3rd party oversight is Apple trying to go all Big Brother on me, and I don't care for it.
I also disagree with Apple's stance on flash. Will it ruin battery life, crash unexpectedly, and open up my iphone to security holes? Maybe. But give me the option! Warn me if you must, but let me decide! Give me a choice. Maybe I don't care so much about battery life. You have given me a platform…let me use the platform to do what >I< want to do, not what you want to let me do.
Anyway, if you look at all of that, you'd think I'm hopping on the Android express. After all, it is the literal fix for all that is wrong with the iphone.
But…
Even with all it's problems, the iPhone does some things so amazingly well, that for me to move to another platform, somebody will have to do something AMAZING.
The first thing is battery life. The new iPhone blows the competition out of the water. It isn't even close. Even discounting the reports on the internet of amazing longevity, in the limited test I did this morning…it is impressive. A full 1.5 hour commute on my old 3GS takes about half my battery life. If I didn't plug it in while I was at work, it would be near empty when I got home (after the 1.5 hour leg on the other end). When I got in this morning…my battery life was down to just 85%…and I was watching video the WHOLE way in this morning. Amazing.
The second is apps. I am a heavy user of apps. There is literally an app for everything and I use them all. I spend 3+ hours commuting every single day, and during my commute, my iphone is my primary entertainment device. I play games, watch movies, listen to podcasts, surf the web, listen to music, goof around with doodling in mobile sketchbook, mess with guitar riffs in 'iShred', and if I'm feeling especially productive, I can even vpn into work and work through an ssh terminal or even a full remote desktop.
Does Android have an app for all that? Maybe…but all those things already exist on the iPhone and they are incredibly easy and simple…I don't have to work at it to make it work.
The point I guess is that I'm sticking with the iPhone for one simple reason: It works. It does everything I need it to, the interface is extremely good, and it finally can stream pandora while I'm playing games. Now I just need the iShred authors to update their software so that it works in ios4. Then I'll be set. :)

Price drops
The Nook just dropped in price. It was 259 bucks, now it is down to 199 bucks, so many customers who purchased it say…a month ago are pissed and believe they are owed a refund.
This happened with the original iPhone, and many, many, many, other electronic devices including PC's and other peripherals.
What flabbergasts me about this attitude is that…it is the very NATURE of technology. Technology gets better, thus the older technology drops in price, eventually being superseded entirely by more advanced technology.
If you want to buy technology that never drops in price, you will be hard pressed to find it. As of this writing both the Kindle and Nook have recently dropped in price. And, I'll go out on a limb and say that within the next say…6 months, there will be an announcement of a feature upgrade for each of these devices. Why? It is the cycle of these things…
You release a product, give it some time, drop the price some to generate more sales mid-product cycle, release an update at the same time as another price drop and the cycle repeats.
Here is the approach I take to this stuff, and recommend to people:
Figure out if the hardware you are about to purchase is worth the price they are asking. If it is, buy it. If not….don't. This is a personal thing. The kindle isn't worth a thing to me, as I still like to read real books. Call me a technophile if you must, but I like and understand the book interface, and I don't need 2500 books in my pocket wherever I go…I only read one at a time.
At any rate, Kindle at 150 bucks (or whatever it is right now) = not worth it. iPhone 4 at 200 bucks = worth it. For me. Your mileage may vary.
And if they drop the iPhone price to 99 bucks in a few months…it doesn't matter. It was worth the price to me when I bought it. I certainly don't expect a refund. It sure doesn't work the other way right? If Apple raised the price, I wouldn't expect a bill in the mail:
"Dear Valued Apple Customer,
Due to the overwhelming volume of iPhone 4 orders, we've decided to raise the price by 10 bucks in order to make massive amounts of cash and fill a swimming pool with hundred dollar bills and just burn it. I mean, how cool would that be? So enclosed you will find a bill for 10 dollars. If you don't pay this bill, we will shut your phone off and email the nudie pics that you took of your girlfriend that one time to your mom and everybody at your work (she is very hot by the way).
Hugs and Kisses,
Steve Jobs"

Kick-Ass
It was awesome.
With the kids at school, I got to spend a little time with Shana, cook some new food, read a book, play video games until my brain bled, and we even (shocking!) got to go see a rated 'R' movie at the theater for once. With kids around and babysitters fairly far away, this is a pretty rare treat.
Shana and I both love movies. It is really one of the few hobbies/activities that we both truly enjoy doing. Most other activities entail various stages of compromise, but there are no arguments in my house when movie time is suggested. Sure, we have some taste differences, but for the most part both of us have a pretty wide range, and most movies fit into what we both enjoy (or at least will tolerate).
As a result of our love for movies, our kids get to watch a lot of them. Our kids have been watching PG13 movies for quite some time (as long as we watch them first), and I can't even remember a time where we restricted them from watching 'PG' movies. There are even *some* 'R' rated movies that I have allowed (tho they are DEFINITELY few and far between).
Why? I trust my kids to not be violent because they see a violent movie. I trust them not to say bad words that they see in movies. And I trust them to understand that adult romance is for adults.
That said, nudity in a film will definitely exclude it. Excessive profanity will exclude a flick from their viewing. And major adult themes will also exclude a film. We are liberal and open minded with what we let them watch, but even liberal parents that we are, we have our limits.
I say all that to say that before I saw 'Kick-Ass' I thought maybe, just maybe, this might be a film that we'd wind up letting the kids watch, even though it was rated 'R'.
Now that I've seen it....there is no way in hell that will ever happen. When the 10 year old girl in the movie has a line like this:
Kick-Ass: “How do I get a hold of you?”Yeah...my kids aren't going to watch this movie. Hit Girl is a character that kick's major booty in the movie. A hero that my kids would identify with and cheer for. A character that they might try and emulate. Thus my kids cannot see this until they are much, much, much, much, much, much older.
Hit-Girl: “You just contact the Mayor’s office, he has a special signal he shines in the sky. It’s in the shape of a giant c*ck.”

Jerry Rice
I cursed Steve Young when he took over for Joe Montana. And then of course, I also cheered for Steve Young when he took the team to another Superbowl. I even cheered (through clinched teeth) for Terrell Owens while he was a niner. Not nearly as hard as I cheered when he left.
But my favorite football player of all time is without question: Jerry Rice.
There are a million stats to choose from, but here is a list of all the NFL records he held when he retired:
Touchdowns (208)
Receiving TDs (197)
Receiving TDs in a season (22)
Consecutive games with a TD reception (13)
TDs in Super Bowls (8)
Receiving TDs in a single Super Bowl (3)
Postseason TDs (22).
Receptions (1,549)
Consecutive games with a reception (274)
Receptions in Super Bowls (33)
Postseason receptions (151).
Receiving yards (22,895)
Receiving yards in a season (1,848)
Receiving yards in Super Bowls (589)
Receiving yards in a single Super Bowl (215)
Postseason receiving yards (2,245)
Seasons with at least 1,000 yards receiving (14)
The term 'Greatest Receiver of All time' is not an exaggeration. Greatest football player of all time might be debatable, but he is certainly worthy of consideration for that category as well. He wins on my list, but I'll admit to a bias.
Now, there are folks that have said "Well, sure he is great and all, but he had the advantage of playing with TWO Hall of Fame quarterbacks over his career, plus an absolutely dominant offensive line and the great coaching mind of Bill Walsh".
While true, I'd argue that those elements were as successful as they were BECAUSE of Jerry Rice being on the field. That was the caliber of player he was. He made the people around him better.
Want evidence? When Rice went to the Raiders late in his career he put up big numbers for two seasons (83 catches/1,139 yards/9 TDs and 92 catches/1,211 yards/7 TDs) and propelled Rich Gannon to became league MVP. Coincidence?
And the greatest thing about him is that he didn't do it through pure talent. Oh, he was certainly talented, there is no question about that. But he was the BEST because he worked harder than anyone else in order to become the best. His routes were the precise work of a perfectionist. His offseason workouts were the stuff of legend, and absolutely changed how players prepare for a season today.
There is a lesson there. Talent will take you far. The NFL is filled with promising talent. But the guys who work harder than anybody else... The guys that PUSH harder than anybody else. Those are the Hall of Famers. Jerry Rice embodied that.
What's more, he did it without the showboating antics of some of today's NFL 'stars'. He did it with professionalism and class.
He is up for the Hall of Fame this coming weekend, and there really isn't any controversy there. He will get in his first year of eligibility because he is without question, the greatest wide receiver who has ever played the game.
He is also the greatest football player I've ever had the pleasure to watch, and even though there was never a doubt he'd get in, I'm still extremely happy to see it happen. I'm a football fan. I'm a 49ers fan. I'm a Rice fan.

Challenges and opportunities
I'm in the midst of a transition in my job. The systems that I currently support are in the process of being decommissioned. It isn't anything imminent...it will be years before the users are completely transitioned off of the system.
That said, I'm faced with the unpleasant reality that this particular job is not going to be long term. I actually enjoy my job, the commute is great, and the pay/benefits are very good. In short, I really wouldn't move if I didn't have to.
But it seems I don't have much of a choice, thus the first part of my challenge: I will need to make a career move sometime in 2010. (ugh)
I despise job hunting. I was recruited into this job by a friend, and I was at my previous job for 5 years before that. So I really haven't hunted for a job in over 8 years.
There are opportunities at my current company, but that is also a challenge. My company will pay for pretty much any technical training I could ever ask for, which is an amazing opportunity. But...I am a UNIX/Linux guy right now, and I love my job. The company I work for is completely non-unix/linux. In fact, it is pretty much the biggest non-linux company around.
So I can't really find a job in my current company doing the same thing I'm doing now. If I didn't love my job so much, it would be pretty easy to take advantage of the training and just swap jobs...and that certainly isn't off the table, by any stretch of the imagination.
If I was early in my career the choice would be easier. But in the mid-to-senior level that I'm in, its hard to sacrifice a bunch of experience and expertise and jump into something completely different. Not to mention that I'm used to being the absolute expert on the things I work on, and I'm not looking forward to that changing (even in the short term).
Anyway, I have a lot of work to do. From tidying up my resume, to taking advantage of a bunch of training...
If only I wasn't so lazy...

Star Trek Online Review
Before I start, some opening comments:
First, yes..I'm a Star Trek geek. TNG is really my favorite Star Trek, but I have pretty much seen them all and loved them.
Second, STO is not WoW.
I hesitate to give any review on this to my friends because my 'gamer' friends are (mostly) folks I met playing WoW, and it is honestly a VERY different game. It is really a different genre altogether, so whether or not you like WoW has very little bearing on whether you will like this game.
LOTRO, Warhammer, and Aion are "wow-clones". I'm sure they would all balk at that particular classification (and in fact, it might be said that WoW is merely an EQ clone), but they all have a whole host of similarities. It is easy to compare the two: "LOTRO has an innovative questing system" or "The instanced dungeons in Warhammer leave a lot to be desired".
Those comparisons work because there is a hidden "as compared to WoW" in each of those sentences.
STO is it's own animal. It is primarily a space game. It isn't "WoW in space" either. It is it's own thing.
Anyway, you start off life in Star Trek Online creating your character. You have a plethora of options: You can be human (BORING), Vulcan (Nerd!), or a whole bunch of other 'premade' races. Or, if you are creative, you can make your own race.
I'm not particularly creative, but I wanted a dude with crazy bug eyes and a yellow scar on his cheek. And by damn I got it.
After creating your dude, you start out life as a lowly ensign while Leonard Nimoy does a quick narration to explain wtf is happening. All I got from it was "blah blah blah, I'm Leonard effing Nimoy, and I >AM< Star Trek." Anywho, the story takes place after the destruction of the Romulan Homeworld and after Spock did something with red matter that saved the world (universe?) so he could go back in time and reboot the franchise with Sylar and that chick from Avatar.
Meanwhile, you are hanging around in the bar of your ship, thinking about hitting on that cute blue chick with the weird forehead, when THE BORG ATTACK.
This is just the tutorial, so luckily these are the sucky Borg. *whew*
I probably should mention that Sylar is giving you the rest of the tutorial (after Leonard Nimoy quit talking). Actually, there was probably a better place to mention it, but I don't feel like editing just to make this post make sense. Just run with it.
Anyway, catastrophe strikes and your Captain (and apparently every other person on the ship) dies, leaving it all up to you to command your ship to victory over the sucky Borg!
Doing so, you impress Star Fleet and they promote you to Lieutenant, and make your command permanent. Or something. I dunno, I was busy shooting LASERS at stuff.
So anyway, gameplay: You basically do a bunch of missions. These impress Star Fleet. Impressing Star Fleet gets you promoted. Promotions mean cooler ships, access to better weapons, and more points to spend on your character build.
Each mission is either a space mission, away mission, or some combination of the two. For space missions, you find somebody in space doing something bad, and you fire your lasers until they blow up. There are also annoying ones that make you fly around and scan stuff. I hate those.
For away missions, you have to beam down to a planet and stop some bad guys from doing something. Usually by shooting them.
Combo missions are just that. Space shoot-em-up followed by ground shoot-em-up.
Since they are really two very different gameplay methods, I'll talk about each seperately:
Away Missions:
This is your fairly standard squad based 3rd person shooter with a few neat devices: First, you gain additional damage by shooting people in the back. Apparently this game was not designed with peaceful Starfleet doctrine in mind, because the tactics basically incentivise you to sneak around and behind people, shooting them in the back.
Second, there is an expose/exploit system in play. If you or your team hit somebody, it has a chance to trigger an 'expose'. If you use a special attack on them defined as an 'exploit' attack, it explodes for massive damage (one shots most things).
These two elements make the combat on the ground interesting, but thus far it has all been fairly easy. My strategy is usually to run in guns blazing and hope for the best. And I haven't actually died yet, so I guess I'm doing something right.
Space missions:
This is both the selling point of the game, and the most frustrating part of the game for me. I like space battle games, I really do. That said, THE CAMERA IN THIS GAME IS DRIVING ME INSANE. If I steer the ship with the mouse, the camera isn't a problem. But I >hate< 'flying' with a mouse. So I use the keyboard. But then I'm never 'looking' where I want to look. So I'm constantly going back and forth between keyboard and mouse, which is driving me nuts.
Beyond that annoyance, the space battle are pretty fun. There is a lot of depth to the system and once you start getting some bridge officers (who bring their own skills to the table), you start to use a lot of strategy. The firing arcs of your various weapons make positioning the key part of every battle, which makes it less of a 'twitch gaming' sort of Wing Commander-esque thing and more of a...well, Star Trek game. It feels more like a naval battle actually, just played out in 3 dimensions.
There are some downsides to the game that I've found so far though. First, it is pretty repetitive. I can't really play it for long stretches of time without getting bored out of my mind.
Second, 'open teaming' is a concept that I HATE WITH EVERY FIBER OF MY BEING, and it is on by default. If you have never heard of 'open teaming' (or 'open groups' or 'public groups'), the game will just randomly put you in groups with people that are on the same quest as you are on.
And...here is a scary truth: People generally suck at video games. At least the people who I get stuck pugging with. Granted, the game is two days old, so nobody expects anybody to be experts in it, but the tutorial tells you "photon torpedos are good to use against unshielded targets". So lets see....if a target has their shields up, maybe you should think about using a different weapon!
But no. People are dumb.
Beyond the open groups and somewhat repetitive gameplay, there are some pretty glaring bugs that make the game look clunky and unfinished. I'm sure they will sort those out, but it lacks...polish.
That said, there is some fun to be had playing the game. I spent my 40 bucks on it, and I'll give it the full (free) month before I make a final decision. But so far the only fair review I can give is that: I played it. I liked it. I plan to play it again.
As I'm only in my very early levels as a character, its difficult to render a more long term decision on the game. But the game is good enough that I want to see what is in store for me in later levels.

Streetfighter: The Legend of Chun-Li
Let me start like this: It is a terrible movie.
But...it has redeeming value in that it is SO BAD, that it is actually entertaining. Entertaining, but not AT ALL for the reasons the filmmaker intended.
The movie stars Kristen Kreuk from Smallville fame as the title character. I'm a pretty big Smallville fan, but not that big a fan of Kristen Kreuk's character in Smallville (Lana Lang). A good drinking game would be to put on an episode and every time Lana says "I want you to be completely honest with me" do a shot. You will be drunk very, very quickly. I want to poke my eyeballs out every time she says it.
That said, I think it was really the writing that set her up for failure on the series, so I don't really blame the actress. As Clark Kent's first "love", there was far too much teenage angst for my liking, and they overplayed Clark's need to keep his 'Secret' from Lana for way longer than necessary. I suppose it made for better drama, but the drama was completely and totally forced.
At any rate, I was cautiously optimistic to see Kristen Kreuk pick up another role. Unfortunately, it had to be in this movie.
Her performance wasn't terrible, given what she had to work with. I just don't buy her as a "kung fu action hero" type, but honestly...she wasn't the thing about the movie that made it so gut-wrenchingly horrid.
If it was just her, the movie would just be a bad movie with a predictable plot and some stupid camera work...barely worth putting in the Netflix queue.
Fortunately, Chris Klien is in the movie, and that makes the movie watchable, but not for the reasons you think. He plays a cop. A cop that is exactly what you'd expect a cop to be...in a cheesy, low budget, badly acted, B-movie that even Bruce Campbell wouldn't touch with a 10-foot pole.
His performance is so amazingly terrible, each line so completely and unbelievably over-acted, each camera shot while he is in the frame so campy and horrid...that you tend to look at it as you would a train wreck. You simply cannot help but just... stare in jaw dropping disbelief that this guy actually gets PAID to be an actor.
Now, this seems like this is partially the director's fault, because clearly this was the type of performance he was trying to get from his actors. If you look at the characters of Bison (Neal McDonough) or Balrog (Michael Clarke Duncan), they have essentially the same issue with over the top acting, but having seen those guys in other movies, it isn't always the case for them. So maybe we can assign some blame to the director.
But Chris Klein goes above and beyond and takes bad acting into a whole different level. He has perfected it into an absolute art form.
The movie is just horrible. There is a narrator (Lana...I mean Chun-Li) that tries to tell you a story, but mostly just illustrates why only bad movies use a narrator to tell a story (except Morgan Freeman in the Shawshank Redemption. He could read me the weather report of Bolivia and I'd be entertained).
There are also gaping plot holes that make you wonder if anybody, even the filmmakers, ever actually watched the movie or tried to follow it.
Most of the martial arts sequences aren't too bad, except that the director apparently decided to integrate many of the moves you see in the game and bring them to life on the big screen. Which is fine. Except that some of the moves are pretty much impossible to do outside of a video game, which makes filming it a challenge. So instead of skipping those moves or doing them with CGI or something...he chose to DO them, but do them crappy and stupid. And...to cover for the fact that those shots are crappy and stupid, he just moves the camera around a lot or pans AWAY from the action.
SIDE NOTE TO DIRECTORS EVERYWHERE:
If you are doing a martial arts sequence, particularly in a martial arts movie, and you pan away from...the effing martial arts sequence....you suck at directing movies and should try a new profession. Like sewing. Maybe you could be a hell of a seamstress. But never, ever, ever, direct anything again. If you were ever called upon, due to national emergency, to direct traffic, I would stay away from your intersection.
But...the best part of this movie, is BY FAR the 'behind the scenes featurette' on the dvd. You absolutely MUST watch this featurette. THESE PEOPLE THINK THEY ARE MAKING STAR WARS OR LORD OF THE RINGS. They talk like this movie is amazing. Like, classic cinema. They talk about the amazing story. They talk about the amazing performances. And they do it all with a straight face. This movie is utter crap and they talk like they are making CINEMA HISTORY.
BWAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHA
The entertainment value of this documentary cannot be measured without getting out a bigger scale. I laughed so hard I cried. It makes me laugh just writing about it.
There is also an audio commentary by CHRIS KLIEN on the dvd. I'm soooooo tempted to watch the movie AGAIN with his commentary. I don't know if I can get through it again though without copious amounts of very strong adult beverages, but I really want to give it a try.
Normally I'd give this movie 0/5 stars, but it is so bad, it goes negative and actually gets -5/5 stars, which is SO BAD that it is AMAZINGLY GOOD. I highly (lowly?) recommend THE EXPERIENCE of seeing this movie.

Super powers
It is a question that is repeated many times, but when you really think about it, you find that that people generally fall into three camps:
1) Invisibility (or, I can see girlz nekkid)
2) Flying
3) Time Travel/Manipulation
Personally, I think if you choose invisibility, you are just a perv. (note: I'd prolly choose it).
If you choose flying, you are just throwing your super power away. You can already fly you idiot! Just have to be in an airplane. That'd be like saying 'I'd like to be able to move at speeds approaching 60 miles per hour'. Duh, get a car.
Also, flying is impractical. You couldn't fly very high...you'd pass out from oxygen deprivation. If you went too fast, the g-forces involved could tear your fragile human body up. You'd have to constantly deal with outdoor weather, and you'd probably get a bird and/or insects slamming into your face all the time.
Screw that, flying is a dumb choice.
Time travel is an interesting choice, but you basically couldn't go backward, for fear of doing all the bad things you see in time travel movies. Which leaves your only option going FORWARD in time, which would kind of suck because...what if the future sucked? Say you go 100 years in the future...everybody you know is dead. Maybe you could visit your great grandchildren or something, but they aren't going to know you, nor are they going to believe that you are a time traveling dude from the past. They will just laugh and blast you with their Omega-43 handheld proto-cannons.
So basically picking time travel is only for people that want to commit suicide by proto-cannon.
No, my pick for a super power is simple: I want a cheat code that gives me unlimited ammunition, weapons, health, armor, and lives. But for real life.
Up up down down left right left right B A Select Start.
I could sell the weapons/ammo/armor for a living. With unlimited supply, I'd be rich in no time.
I'd live forever. And even if I didn't, I'd just instantly 1up on death.
I can't perceive any downsides. If I finally got bored with my eternal life, I could just flip the power switch and my game is over. Or just hit reset and try again without the code. Though honestly, I'd probably get fed up and just enter the code again. I think life has limited replay value, with a few exceptions.
I'm not going to do a silly blog-person type thing and ask that you comment with your preferred super power. I'm going to do the opposite. What is the stupidest super power you can think of, depicted in television or film?
Here is a list to choose from.
